As dusk falls over Shanghai’s Qiantan waterfront, a gentle river breeze carries the smooth cadence of jazz across sprawling green lawns. There are no velvet curtains or acoustic walls here. Instead, open grass serves as the auditorium, where locals and visitors unwind to live melodies while ships glide along the Huangpu River.
For Alec Haavik, a Shanghai-based American jazz musician who has shaped the city’s music scene since 2005, performing along Qiantan’s waterfront offers a liberating break from traditional indoor venues.
“When music moves to the riverside, the audience is no longer passive,” says Haavik, a veteran performer at local cultural staples like the JZ Festival and New Bund Chillout. “The breeze, the sunset, and the water all become part of the performance. Traditional stages enforce a clear boundary between artists and spectators. On the lawn, those boundaries dissolve—people can lounge on picnic mats, let their children play, or simply pause mid-stroll to listen.”
Qiantan’s vision extends beyond its flagship indoor venue, the New Bund 31 Performing Arts Center. By integrating cultural activities into public spaces—including New Bund Red Lane, Crystal Plaza, and Qiantan Leisure Park—the Qiantan International Business District is creating an immersive, boundary-free urban environment.
Haavik believes this accessibility defines a modern, livable metropolis. “A vibrant city shouldn’t rely solely on rigid art galleries or ticketed theaters,” he notes. “Culture should spill into public life, offering spontaneous encounters during an evening walk.”
This seamlessly integrated approach is also reshaping local urban economics. Liu Yanhang, a travel and residential research analyst at Trip.com Group, points out that open waterfront spaces offer a rare sense of freedom where people can linger without the pressure to spend.
“Holding outdoor concerts and themed markets along the river transforms public green spaces into lively destination hubs,” Liu explains. “Visitors stay longer, turned from casual strollers into engaged participants. This steady foot traffic organically feeds into nearby commercial outlets, creating a mutually beneficial ecosystem between cultural engagement and retail.”
By linking professional performing spaces with open lawns and neighborhood commerce, Qiantan has built an interconnected ecosystem. Culture is no longer an isolated ticketed event, but a shared, daily experience woven into the city’s waterfront fabric.
